Why You Should Keep Your Dental Appointment

Did you knock out a tooth recently in the recent years  but have somehow have not gotten around visiting the dentist to get it fixed? Have you been noticing a slight decay in your teeth, a strange smell emanating from your mouth, or increased sensitivity in your gums but still choose to ignore it? You probably think that dental health is not something that you should address immediately, especially if it doesn’t cause you any pain anyway.

The Cost of Oral Complacency

It is this complacent attitude, however, that leads to more serious oral complications. Studies in recent years have established the fact that oral health actually plays a more important role in one’s overall health than previously realized.

ConditionsDiseases such as gastrointestinal issues, facial pain, and even cardiovascular diseases and diabetes have been linked to poor dental hygiene. That missing tooth that you didn’t mind because it didn’t hinder your chewing abilities—that could very well cause your jaw to misalign, developing later on into TMJ (temporomandibular jaw disorder). That decay in your tooth that you didn’t fix can potentially cause nerve damage and bacteria infestation.

Help is Within Reach

Fortunately, all of these things can be avoided and remedied. Regular appointments with your dentist can save you the trouble of dealing with more serious dental problems. Remember: the bigger the problem, the bigger the fix. This, of course, will mean a bigger expense for you, and that’s something you don’t want, for sure.

Teaching Children Good Dental Hygiene

Oral hygiene is an important part of overall health, and even young children can begin making good habits that can last a lifetime. Parents should begin brushing babies' teeth as soon as they appear although only a tiny smear of toothpaste should be placed on the brush. After the age of two, it is appropriate to use a little bit more toothpaste. Flossing should begin as soon as teeth start to come out that are next to one another.

Brushing Twice Daily Might Not Be Enough for Kids

Though encouraging your kids to brush their teeth twice daily might be a way to keep their teeth from decay and other oral problems, these might not be enough. It may seem surprising for some parents to know this, but the truth is that brushing alone isn’t enough to remove all food particles and plaque that may be building up in their children’s mouths.

Pediatric Dentist vs. Family Dentist

A common question asked by parents is what the difference is between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist. To put it simply, a pediatric dentist specializes in handling dental problems specific to children as well as understanding their needs. A family dentist may also be the same, but not every family dentist has familiarity in dealing with children.

Beverages that Can Discolor Your Teeth

Did you know that some of your everyday drinks are responsible for making your teeth lose their white color? While many beverages are not necessarily unhealthy, moderate consumption of these products is vital to counter their eventual effect in staining teeth. A dentist in Philadelphia can aid in explaining how certain beverages work their mayhem on your teeth.

Coffee

Coffee is widely considered to be the lifeblood of most office workers. It is, however, highly acidic and pigmented. The acid weakens the enamel and the inherent color of the drink—whether it’s black or brown coffee with creamer—seeps into the teeth.

Chewing Tobacco Doesn’t Do Your Teeth Any Favors

Some people like chewing tobacco instead of smoking cigarettes. Although it’s viewed as relatively safer than the other, this could still be a problem from a dental and health perspective.

Still Tobacco

Much like cigarettes, spit tobacco (so named for the practice of chewing and spitting it) stayed despite its life-threatening risks. At one point in baseball history, in fact, spit tobacco became a "requirement" to further one's career. Regardless of form, cigarettes and spit tobacco aren't any different. Both contain the sticky stuff that could cause havoc on your body—your teeth being the first to make contact.

Locking in a Stronger Bridge

It is possible that certain conditions will trigger the loss of at least one permanent tooth in either upper or lower sets. When gaps appear after they jar loose, the remaining jawbone moves the rest of the teeth to close the gap. However, when oral functions are critical, you need to address the lack of teeth where they used to be – and a cosmetic dentist can help through installing implant-supported bridges.

Pediatric Dentists: Born Out of Necessity

General dentists cater to teeth of all ages. As they deal with families all the time, these dentists know how to treat teeth of each family member, from the father all the way down to an infant. If a general dentist is near you, is there still a need for one with more specialized training, namely a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentistry was born out of necessity, as with just about every invention humankind has ever made. Simply put, children have needs different from adults and the elderly. A general dentist may be trained to handle kids, but pediatric dentists take it to a higher level because of their specialized training.

Common Causes of Bleeding Gums

When think about oral health, the first thing that probably comes to mind is your teeth. However, you’d be remiss to forget about your gums, the very thing that covers the bone holding the roots of your teeth and helps support the tooth structure.
One of the most common gum problems people have is bleeding. While you may not notice it, or ignore the bleeding altogether - it can seriously compromise your teeth’s well-being. As your dentist might tell you, there are many reasons for bleeding gums, such as:

Keeping a Child’s Smile Safe in Sports

Many children are into sports like football, soccer, and even martial arts. These same children, however, are also susceptible to injuries that may or may not require medical attention. Dental emergencies are also common among young kids, particularly those who enjoy contact sports.

A common dental emergency in sports is a knocked-out tooth due to an errant elbow or other blow to the area of the mouth. In such cases, the child’s guardian should pick up the tooth by the crown, store the tooth in a container of milk, and immediately seek the help of a dentist.

How Dental Procedures Could Help You

When asked what the essentials of dental care are, most people might answer “home oral care and regular dental visits”. Sure, the latter might cause some to cringe, but the bottom line is that your diligence in brushing your teeth two to three times a day will amount to little without maintenance and preventive treatments from your dentist. What exactly are the common dental services that only dentists can provide?

When it comes to preventive procedures, regular checkups and routine oral exams are done by the dentist to inspect each tooth and all parts of the oral cavity for cleanliness and health. Not all problems are visible to the naked eye, though, making x-rays an invaluable diagnostic tool. There are a variety of x-ray types specific to the teeth and mouth. Some may focus on a particular tooth, while some may encompass the sizable sections or the whole oral cavity. Then there's tooth cleaning. Routine tooth cleanings increase the strength of one’s teeth and prevent problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

Why You Should Seek Emergency Dental Services

No matter how seemingly small or simple an injury may be to your teeth or gums, calling for professional dental treatment is crucial; particularly when the affected area hurts, swells, or bleeds uncontrollably. Dental emergencies like a chipped or dislodged tooth, and lost crowns or fillings need the immediate attention of a qualified emergency dentist.
There may be quick remedies to injured teeth or mouth to relieve pain, or prevent swelling and bruising. However, further complications like infections may occur if you do not seek the needed emergency dental assistance. Likewise, you will have better chances of saving the tooth and the tissues, preventing serious problems, and relieving yourself of any pain or bleeding if you go to a dentist immediately after an accident.

The Risk Involved in Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam is a material that has been widely used as tooth fillings for over a century without much doubt on its safety. Around three years ago, however, scientific findings caused the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reclassify amalgams from a no-risk Class I medical device to Class II (more risk). The reason for this is that the mercury content in amalgam, although minimal, is expected to gradually be released as the filling is exposed to different substances and constant vibrations in the mouth.

Philly Kids are Most Vulnerable to Tooth Decay

According to the St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children, about 25 percent of all children in the country aged two to five suffer from a dental disease. However, some cities like Philadelphia have it much worse: approximately 80 percent of all kids of the same age group in North Philly have untreated dental diseases, particularly tooth decay. One contributor to this statistic is that some schools in the area have either closed down or cut down on their staff, staff who could have very well given them access to dental exams.
