Emergency dental work requires a skilled and experienced dentist who can perform a wide variety of procedures. But just as much as the experience in performing procedures is critical to your care, the mindset and philosophy of the practicing dentist is crucial in guiding the practice of dentistry and medicine. Few people know or understand the philosophy of their provider, but it is important because it is the foundation upon which they make decisions regarding your health. One of the philosophies that is growing popularity is the practice of holistic dentistry.

Why You Should Keep Your Dental Appointment

Did you knock out a tooth recently in the recent years  but have somehow have not gotten around visiting the dentist to get it fixed? Have you been noticing a slight decay in your teeth, a strange smell emanating from your mouth, or increased sensitivity in your gums but still choose to ignore it? You probably think that dental health is not something that you should address immediately, especially if it doesn’t cause you any pain anyway.

The Cost of Oral Complacency

It is this complacent attitude, however, that leads to more serious oral complications. Studies in recent years have established the fact that oral health actually plays a more important role in one’s overall health than previously realized.

ConditionsDiseases such as gastrointestinal issues, facial pain, and even cardiovascular diseases and diabetes have been linked to poor dental hygiene. That missing tooth that you didn’t mind because it didn’t hinder your chewing abilities—that could very well cause your jaw to misalign, developing later on into TMJ (temporomandibular jaw disorder). That decay in your tooth that you didn’t fix can potentially cause nerve damage and bacteria infestation.

Help is Within Reach

Fortunately, all of these things can be avoided and remedied. Regular appointments with your dentist can save you the trouble of dealing with more serious dental problems. Remember: the bigger the problem, the bigger the fix. This, of course, will mean a bigger expense for you, and that’s something you don’t want, for sure.

Preparation Procedures

Teaching Children Good Dental Hygiene

Oral hygiene is an important part of overall health, and even young children can begin making good habits that can last a lifetime. Parents should begin brushing babies' teeth as soon as they appear although only a tiny smear of toothpaste should be placed on the brush. After the age of two, it is appropriate to use a little bit more toothpaste. Flossing should begin as soon as teeth start to come out that are next to one another.

Damaged Teeth? Get Fillings for a Better Smile

A smile can give people a good impression of you. However, tooth decay can have unsightly effects, and ruin a person’s smile. For instance, teeth with cavities can turn black or yellow and are considered quite bad to look at. This is where fillings come in. If the cavities are not widespread, the right use of fillings can restore a tooth into looking like its original state. A good cosmetic dentist can clean out the cavities of rotten material and disinfect them to stop further decay. After that, the fillings are applied; these would provide protection to the teeth and stop bacteria from entering. Also, fillings aren’t just for tooth decay; they can be used when teeth are damaged.

Types of Fillings

Depending on how bad the damage is, and considering your needs and budget, there are different types of fillings available. First, there are gold fillings; easy to mold into the needed shape, gold also happens to be highly durable and hard to tarnish. Second, there are silver amalgam fillings which are very resistant to wear. Finally, there are composite and porcelain fillings that look like natural teeth and are often used on the front to make them look natural.

Consult First

Your choice of fillings can be narrowed down through a consultation with your dentist. After all, a professional would know what’s best to use for your particular situation. Additionally, cosmetic dentistry also provides other options on how to repair a damaged tooth, like veneers and crowns.

First-Aid Tips for Kids’ Dental Emergencies

With school over, children are most likely enjoying the summer heat by playing sports outdoors. Doing so, however, can lead to knocked out or cracked teeth, especially if they haven’t been wearing a mouthguard or a helmet while playing. For these dental emergencies, take the following steps first before bringing them to a pediatric dentist for further treatment:

First-Aid for Cracked Tooth

Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water to keep the area clean. Apply a cold compress to the area of injury to avoid swelling and to soothe pain.

First-Aid for Knocked-Out Tooth

If your child knocks out a tooth, be sure that he didn’t sustain a more serious injury. Knocked out baby teeth need not to be moistened, though they should still be brought to a dentist. Permanent teeth, however, need to be kept moist at all times by placing them in a container with a tooth preservation product or milk.

Aid for Toothache

What if your child hasn’t sustained any injury, yet he’s complaining of a toothache? First, rinse his mouth with warm water to clean it, then gently use dental floss to get rid of any food particles that might have been caught between his teeth. Never use aspirin on your child’s tooth or gums for it could only burn the surrounding gum tissue. If the pain remains, immediately consult a pediatric dentist.

Signaling an SOS for your Dentist

The pursuit of various daily activities, especially physically-intensive ones, means the threat of damage to your teeth is ever-present. When something does happen and the pain flares up, consulting an emergency dentist in Philadelphia who is educated in the treatment of your overall health will provide you with a better defense against whatever is going on.

Visiting an emergency dentist who can provide a natural and holistic viewpoint will allow you to see the bigger picture in your situation. Mouth pains have been linked for a time to medical problems that can be more serious than a mere toothache. Using this approach attempts to better the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life, and visiting someone skilled at such an approach could even mean the difference between life and death.

Heart disease, stroke and osteoporosis are just three of many common issues that could be causing difficulties in your gums or teeth, both as side effects and as signs. Mouth sores and warts or other kinds of growth are common in people affected by HIV or heart disease. Furthermore, studies have linked gum disease with the presence of diabetes. If you feel anything out of the ordinary, it’s best to consult your dentist to be sure.
