Gum disease in itself
is already harmful to your dental health – not only will bacteria
weaken your gums, but it might even ravage your teeth. To make
matters worse, there are many studies that show how periodontal
problems could also affect the rest of your body, particularly your
immune system, which is why you should have it treated as soon as you
notice its early signs.
Essentially,
periodontal disease is an infection or injury to the tissue that
supports the teeth (the gums). The common cause of this condition is
plaque. Gums are susceptible to inflammation (gingivitis) when left
at the mercy of bacteria in sticky or hardened plaque. When inflamed
and damaged, the gums may lose their ability to hold the teeth.
