A
common question asked by parents is what the difference is between a
pediatric dentist and a family dentist. To put it simply, a pediatric
dentist specializes in handling dental problems specific to children
as well as understanding their needs. A family dentist may also be
the same, but not every family dentist has familiarity in dealing
with children.
Pediatric
dentists are dedicated to children from infancy up to the teen years.
They have received special training to know how to care for a child’s
teeth, gums, and mouth as these are developing. Most children start
to lose their first set of teeth by 6 or 7 years of age, a second set
of teeth start to appear, and these ones are permanent. These must be
cared for properly so that children won’t have any tooth decay or
bite problems.
It
is important to have specialized dentists for children because their
bodies are still in the early stages of development, including their
teeth. Their chompers have to be carefully looked into and treated to
ensure that there will be no problems moving forward. Anything that
happens during these stages can very well stay with the child until
he grows up. Pediatric dentists have the expertise necessary in
effectively caring for your young one’s teeth.
