Know Some Common Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can occur at any point without warning. They can cause excruciating pain, and should be dealt with as soon as possible to avoid further injuries and damages to teeth, and to avoid any extensive treatments down the line. Those with dental emergencies should see a dentist right away, but could also take some immediate steps to alleviate the situation.

  • Toothache – when your tooth starts aching out of nowhere, rinse your mouth with warm water, then floss each side of the aching tooth.
  • Objects stuck in-between teeth – the first thing that has to be done is to rinse with warm water and attempt to remove the object with floss. If the object refuses to come out, then a dentist should be seen.
  • Chipped tooth – after rinsing the mouth with warm water, pressure must be applied with a piece of gauze on the bleeding area, until the bleeding stops. A cold compress can help with the swelling.  A dentist should be seen right away, no matter what.
  • Knocked-out tooth – the tooth that was knocked out should be retrieved without touching the root. If still intact, a dentist may be able to put it back in place. Rinse the tooth with milk or water then bring it to the dentist with you.
  • Lost filling or crown – loose fillings or crowns can often be held in place temporarily with dental cement. Otherwise, the crown should be kept and a dentist should be seen right away.
