How to Take Care of Your Children’s Teeth

Your children’s dental health is an important consideration while they’re growing up. Every parent wants to ensure that their children develop good oral habits to prevent a myriad of dental problems and health complications that could arise from the presence of a major dental disease. To provide the best care for your children early on, it is always best to consult with their pediatric dentist for proper care throughout their growing years.

Pediatric dentists are specially trained to deal with the oral hygiene and dental issues of infants and adolescents. The moment your baby’s first tooth shows, schedule a consultation with a pediatric dentist that, very likely, would be the personal dentist your child will have through the years. Since your child’s first check-up, a regular visit of once every six months is advisable.

A pediatric dentist should be able to advise you on the correct way to take care of your children’s teeth. Here are a few guidelines that every parent should know:

  • When teeth erupt, it is time to start brushing. There are soft-bristled brushes designed for infants and they should be used twice a day. Starting at two years old, fluoride toothpaste can be used to help prevent cavities.
  • Tooth decay can be caused by a high sugar diet, excessive breastfeeding, and nighttime bottle feeding. To help avoid this, don’t nurse children to sleep and only use water in their bed-time bottle.
  • Have dental sealant applied to children’s teeth. Sealants help fill out the ridges and creases in their teeth that can catch food particles that cause cavities. Easily applied and long-lasting, dental sealants are an effective way to protect children from tooth decay.
