Treatment Options for Severely Damaged Teeth

A healthy tooth is meant to last a lifetime, but accidents can happen at any time. Almost everyone will lose at least one adult tooth or need to have a tooth extracted at some point, and a dental implant remains one of the most effective treatment options for a complete smile restoration.

The Initial Appointment

Anyone that has recently damaged a tooth or noticed unusual issues such as tooth discoloration should immediately schedule an appointment with their dentist. If the tooth is severely damaged and cannot be preserved, then the dentist might suggest an extraction followed by the placement of a
dental implant.

Your First Procedure

This process is typically carried out over the course of three or four months in order for the patient to recover between appointments. After the tissue has healed from the extraction, the dentist will then need to prep the patient's jawbone. In some cases, this will include a bone graft to strengthen the jaw. At this point, the implant rod can be anchored into the healthy bone where it will form a powerful bond with the patient's mouth.

Custom Dental Crowns

Most patients will need at least a few months before their mouth heals completely and they can finish restoring their smile. Once the rod has fused with the bone, an abutment is attached to the rod to lengthen it and create “saddle” for the crown. After the abutment is in place, the patient's custom dental crown is affixed to the rod.
