Visit an Emergency Dentist in Philadelphia When Gum Disease is Evident

According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about half of American adults older than 30 suffer from some degree of periodontal or gum disease. In addition, multiple studies have also estimated that between 48 and 50 percent of American adults, or approximately 65 million Americans, have either mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis, which is the most potent form of gum disease. For adults 65 or older, incidence rates skyrocket to 70 percent. The numbers shared above are very alarming, considering gum disease isn’t a mouth-only issue. For one, various studies have shown people with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from cardiovascular issues like coronary artery disease. Though researchers are still unable to know why, there’s an accepted theory that the same bacteria which infects the gums and teeth find their way into the blood stream via wounds in the mouth, and eventually settle down in the heart’s blood vessels.
