About half of Americans age
30 and above suffer from a certain degree of periodontal disease, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As this population reaches 65 or
above, the rate of gum disease
incident is expected to soar to 70 percent. That’s an alarmingly huge
number, considering the complications of such a disease.
Complications
Various studies have shown people
with gum disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from cardiovascular issues
like coronary artery disease. Though researchers are still unable to find why,
there’s an accepted theory that the same bacteria, which infects the gums and teeth,
find their way into the blood stream via wounds in the mouth and eventually
settle down in the heart’s blood vessels.
Response
One should visit a reliable emergency
dentist immediately as soon as symptoms of gum disease begin to manifest. The universal
indicators would be swollen, tender gums that bleed at the slightest nudge, and
receding gums which appear to pull away from the teeth. Loose teeth, mouth sores,
and in worse cases, pus between the gums and the teeth are also clear indicators.
Remedy and Prevention
Gum disease can be cured or
prevented through a combination of proper oral hygiene and help from your local
dentist. Cutting back on vices like smoking and alcohol consumption and using special
oral care products like antibiotic mouthwash to disinfect the mouth can also
help. Regular dental checkups are the most important part of the treatment.
