Teaching Kids to Brush the Right Way

Clean teeth can not only give your kids a great smile, but can also have positive effects on their overall well-being. Pediatric dentists around the world recommend regularly cleaning children’s teeth as soon as the first set appears. They also say kids should be introduced to the toothbrush when they turn two or three years old.

Most kids learn how to brush their teeth from their parents, so parents should revisit their knowhow on the proper way to brush.

The Proper Technique

The American Dental Association has given guidelines on the proper way of brushing, which applies to both kids and adults. First, you should place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums, then gently move it back and forth in wide yet short strokes. For inner tooth surfaces, position the brush vertically and do up and down strokes. Don’t forget to brush the chewing surfaces, as well, and your tongue.

Your Kid’s Toothbrush

Your kid’s first toothbrush (at the age of two or three) should be small and soft-bristled, so as not to damage their young teeth. Use only pea-sized fluoride toothpaste, then remind the child to brush twice a day. Children’s toothbrushes should be changed every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if they show signs of wearing.
