The typical person might think of dentistry as
little more than a study of caring for the teeth, but this aren’t the only
things dentists are concerned with. Dentistry also addresses issues relating to
other bones, tissues, and organs in the mouth. Of course, studies even claim
that dental problems like periodontal disease could be taking a toll on the
body as a whole.
A good smile, for one, may still be hard to come by
if one is suffering from a discomforting condition like Temporomandibular Joint
Disorder (TMJ). Pain in the lower jaw area and clicking noises when moving the
mouth are the most common symptoms of TMJ. Dentists can also detect the
disorder through oral examinations, usually by measuring how wide the patient
can open his mouth.
There are several ways to treat TMJ, depending on
the severity of the condition. In mild cases, pain relievers can ease the
symptoms and reduce inflammation. Massaging the affected area, and applying hot
or cold compress can also help.
A holistic treatment is a very good option for TMJ
sufferers. Holistic TMJ treatment can include traditional methods such as
prescribing anti-biotics and other medications, as well as using orthopedic
appliances and mouth guards. In addition to these, however, a holistic approach
may also include diet changes and food supplements to eliminate the toxins and
bacteria in the body that could be causing the disease.
