Don’t Be Fooled: Dental Care Myths Exposed

Everyone, at least most everyone, brush their teeth daily—and, unfortunately, feel that it’s all they need to know about dental care. It’s even more astonishing that a few dental myths get around and continue to be popular. Here are a few of them, and the facts that have been revealed behind them:

  • Eating fruits before bed cleans teeth: Definitely not true. Most fruits like bananas and apples have sugar content in them. It’s bad habit because the sugar and acid that they provide are the perfect condition for plaque to thrive in. When done for the day, settle for brushing your teeth, and lay off food.
  • An interval of every six months for dental checkup is required: Depends. Your dentist is the final judge of how often you need to make that visit. Some people have conditions that require regular sessions, while others can go two years without a visit. However, a visit every six months is ideal when no pressing conditions exist.
  • White teeth are healthy teeth: Not necessarily. Teeth naturally end up being stained because of what we eat, and because of age. If you really want shining pearly whites, you’ll need to get a bit of assistance through professional teeth whitening procedures.
  • The more sugar you eat, the worse your teeth are: Not quite. It’s not sugar itself that causes damage to your teeth, but the bacteria that live in your mouth that start the damage work. The remnants of sugar in your mouth only feeds the bacteria so it can secrete acid. If you must indulge your sweet tooth, then make sure you follow proper oral health hygiene, including the basics of daily brushing of teeth and regular dental check-ups.
