The chosen field of medicine often denotes the kind of doctor he or she will be in the future. In the field of dental health, the doctors are called dentists. However, due to the continuous technological developments, the dental field has been further categorized into different specialties.
Orthodontics deals with the straightening and realignment of teeth. Cosmetic dentistry deals with visually-improving devices put into or done on the teeth such as implants and whitening. Pediatric dentistry is focused on the treatment of children. There are more fields of dentistry; yet, with all these specialties at hand, some of these services may be part of general dentistry.
General dentistry is the wider field of the study and treatment of teeth. General dentists can offer a host of services from basic dental procedures to treatments, restorations, or enhancements that the dentist has been trained to install or manage. General dentists may also see patients from children to the elderly, as their scope is broad.
Dentistry is one of the widest fields in the medical world. With multiple specializations and technological and methodical breakthroughs, it is still widely possible for the branch to expand further. As of today, connections between dental health and overall health continue to flourish. In a future setting, dentists may even identify the kind of health problem by simply examining the teeth.
