People usually only get
two sets of teeth in their life, and both sets are extremely tough.
The tooth’s enamel is the toughest part of the human body, and
scientists have even discovered that human
teeth can be just as strong as shark teeth.
Despite their strength,
however, human teeth are not invulnerable to damage.
Improper brushing,
forgetting to floss, and skipping regular dental checkups can all
cause little holes to develop in your teeth courtesy of bacteria.
Sometimes, teeth can also be damaged by trauma, such as when you bite
down on hard candy or— even worse— when you use them as a bottle
cap opener. Such damages can be repaired with the help of tooth
fillings.
Most dentists will
often give patients the option of what filling to use— amalgam,
composite, ionomers or gold. However, a number of practitioners of
cosmetic dentistry,
insist on using only biocompatible fillings to ensure that the body
will not react negatively to the filling substance and cause the
patient discomfort. Patients generally feel that their teeth are more
sensitive to sweets, cold, air and pressure immediately after the
procedure, but it should go away within a week or two. If not, a
return trip to the dentist’s office may be necessary to check for
problems like overfilling and underfilling, or to replace the filling
with a more compatible material.
